Hello from the Glory Bee’s Sewing Center!  We hope all of our customers are enjoying the cooler weather as we slide into the holiday season. Come in and browse our fall, Thanksgiving, and Christmas fabrics, as well as those fabrics with a “wintery” theme.  Take a class to add a new skill to your sewing adventures.  As always, we are available to help with fabric selection and other aspects of your projects.

On October 11, 12, and 13, we held our 3-day Sew-in here at Glory Bee’s.  Our participants had a wonderful time completing new projects such as Fabric Boxes, No-sew Fabric Stars, Project Pouches, and Pet Bandanas.  They were also able to work on (and often finish!) their own projects including quilts, table runners, wall hangings, and pillows.  So much was accomplished--accompanied by conversation, laughter, and the sharing of ideas and fabrics.  We look forward to hosting this event again sometime in the future, so please consider joining us next time.

We now have completed quilts for sale!  Come in and browse our selection of colorful quilts ready for your own use or for gift giving.  Many different block designs are available. Also, our kits for table toppers and runners are on display. These make putting together a quick project so easy.  New fabric combinations are being added frequently.

This month’s notion is the Chaco Liner Pen Marker by Clover. This handy tool allows you to mark with chalk that is easily removed usually with just brushing. (Always test on a scrap of your fabric for ease of removing.) The tapered point allows for precision marking, and the tube shape fits easily and comfortably in your hand. We have both white and yellow replacement cartridges in the shop. Mention you saw this notion in “The Buzz” and receive a 20% discount on the price!

Our November classes include some fun and novel holiday projects.  Please check our website frequently as classes are often added during the month. Make certain you always get a copy of the supply list for classes. If you have any questions about class details, please do not hesitate to call us.

Wed., 11/6—Santa Bag.  This delightful tote bag can be useful in so many ways during the season.  Use it yourself for carrying holiday items, or give it to someone as a special gift.  It is easy to construct—you will want to make several!

Fri. and Sat., 11/8 and 9—Nativity Pillow.  This lovely bench pillow is a Kimberbell pattern.  You will need to go online to purchase the embroidery file and embellishment kit before the class, as Glory Bee’s will not be supplying them.  This would make an elegant addition to your holiday décor.

Tues., 11/12—3 Yard Quilt, “Poinsettia Pattern” from Quick Christmas Book. Join us for this popular class that helps you to learn many cutting and sewing skills while you piece together a quilt with your choice of fabrics. This class is for both beginning and experienced quilters.  Stop by the shop before the class if you would like help in selecting fabrics—we will be happy to assist you.

Fri., 11/15—Christmas Club. This is the fourth class designed to help you with holiday gift and décor ideas, as well as allowing you time to complete your own projects. You may join this club at any time, and you will have access to all the patterns we have previously used.  Come spend the day sewing and relaxing while getting ready for the holiday season.

Sats., 11/16 and 23—Christmas Stripes Tree Skirt.   Alison, our guest instructor, will be showing you how to piece this stunning tree skirt from a pattern she designed.  She will explain how to sew together strips and then how to use a 30-degree ruler to cut triangles.  This class is for both new and experienced sewists.  Come learn some new skills and add a colorful base to your holiday tree.

Tues. and Wed., 11/26 and 27—Bear Tracks Quilt.  Take a break from your Thanksgiving preparations to put together this delightful quilt.  The pattern involves a center panel surrounded by blocks and borders.  It would make a great gift or a cozy wrap for winter evenings.

Chuck, our Service Center Manager, has a few suggestions concerning tension issues with your sewing machine.  If you notice your stitches are uneven or distorted or “bird nests” are appearing on the underside of your fabric, there may be a tension problem.  The first thing to do is to completely rethread your machine.  The thread may have moved from the path it should be following from the spool to your needle. Check also that your bobbin is positioned correctly in the bobbin case. Another consideration is—are you using the correct upper thread and bobbin thread and the correct needle for your project?  Sometimes these small corrections can solve a tension problem. Also consult your machine manual as there may be instructions for adjusting tension.

We all have heard the saying: “Measure twice, cut once”.  Gloria likes to emphasize, however, that there are many skills to learn both in measuring and cutting.  You need to know which ruler is best for the project pieces, how to read the ruler correctly, and how to position the ruler to get the most accurate cut.  Precision cutting will ensure that your pieces sew together easily, and that the whole project is the correct size when it is finished.  Many of our classes will help you develop these skills. Our instructors will be happy to assist you with measuring and cutting.
